RTS-1C were used to analyze the timeline of phage-induced molecular changes in infected host cells using Raman tweezers technique (Link to an article).
The studies were carried out on the culture of the Staphylococcus aureus FS159 strain, cultivated with a virulent phage JK2 (=812K1/420) of the Myoviridae family and a temperate phage 80α of the Siphoviridae family in the RTS-1C bioreactors.
The presence of replicating phages in bacterial cells was detected within 5 min after infection.
Research results indicate that Raman tweezers are ideal for detecting real-time host-phage interactions in vivo and lays the foundation for a Raman-based diagnostic instrument capable of characterizing host-phage relationships at the individual cell level, potentially making important contribution in the development of methods of non-destructive detection of phage infections, optimization of phage screening, development of individualized phage therapy and enzybiotics.
